As a new mom of twins, Fairfax-based filmmaker Liz Canning was lonely, stressed about the planet's uncertain future, and missing what made her feel connected, free, and alive: her bicycle. Feeling trapped by her dependence on a car to transport kids, Liz questioned our cultural understanding of comfort. Then she Googled "family bike" and uncovered a global movement of people replacing cars with cargo bikes: long-frame bicycles designed for carrying heavy loads. Liz set out to learn more, and the crowdsourced documentary film Motherload was born.
The fun will begin at 6:00 p.m. with test rides, a cargo bike competition, bike-blender smoothies, and information kiosks set up by local sustainability organizations.
Test rides: The New Wheel electric bicycle shop will have cargo and standard e-bikes available for test rides. Other local retailers have also been invited to participate.
Cargo bike competition: Bring your cargo bike with you to share your experiences and give short rides to an expert panel of local kids. Their favorites will win a gift card from Sausalito Equator.
Local organizations: The Marin County Bicycle Coalition and other local organizations will be on hand to share information about their work promoting sustainability in Marin.
Bike-blender smoothies: Safe Routes to Schools will be giving out free smoothies made onsite with pedal power.
Popcorn: Everyone's favorite movie snack will be available for purchase. You are also welcome to bring a picnic or your own snacks.
The film screening will begin at 7:00 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or low chairs for seating on the lawn area. Temperatures will likely be in the 50s, so dress warmly!
The Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee is made up of volunteers appointed by the City Council. Committee members are passionate about making it safer and more enjoyable to walk and bike about town, with a particular focus on serving schoolchildren and residents.
