Mission, Priorities, and Role

The mission of the Sausalito Sustainability Commission is to advise the City Council on critical priorities that advance our community’s sustainability, equity, and resilience.

The priorities of the Sustainability Commission include mitigating the impacts of climate change by significantly reducing fossil-fuel emissions; adapting to sea level rise, extreme heat events, and drought; and reducing non-compostable and non-recyclable waste. The Sustainability Commission engages the 94965 community to help promote the many resources available in sustainability including renewable energy, water efficiency, clean transportation, and zero waste.

The role of the Sustainability Commission is to:

  • Provide the City Council with specific objectives, targets, and guidance on sustainability priorities including Energy, Transportation, Waste, Water, and Resilience so that city staff can integrate them into city planning and operations.
  • Assess and recommend specific innovative programs, policies, technologies, and models that advance the City’s sustainability goals and priorities.
  • Recommend collaborations with relevant county, Bay Area, and state organizations to help achieve the City’s sustainability priorities.
  • Plan and undertake public education events to encourage residential and commercial participation in all sustainability priorities.
