The Role of the Parks and Recreation Commission

  • Advise the City Council on the activities of the Parks and Recreation Department. Recommendations involving alterations or improvements of parks, playgrounds, and other recreational areas are submitted to the City Council and Community Development Department.
  • Advise on planning and policy matters related to the services provided by the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Advise the Parks and Recreation Department and Public Works Department on planning and policy matters related to the creation, operation, maintenance, management and control of all parks, playgrounds, community recreation programs, and activities.
  • Advise the City Council on the management, execution, installation, or placement of public art in public places within the city.
  • Receive community input on matters relevant to the commission.

Meetings

  • The nine-member Parks and Recreation Commission typically meets quarterly on a first Monday at 6:00 p.m. in the Edgewater Room of City Hall at 420 Litho Street.
  • All meetings of the Parks and Recreation Commission are open to the public.

Membership

  • There are seven at-large commissioners and two artist commissioners.
  • Members must be Sausalito residents.
  • Members are appointed by the City Council.
  • The City Council encourages residents to apply to serve on the Parks and Recreation Commission; if interested, please fill out an application form.
  • The term length is three years, with a maximum of two terms.
  • A member may continue to serve after her or his term expires, until a new member is appointed.
