Update on Racial Justice Initiatives

Post Date:08/14/2020 6:40 PM

At its meeting on July 7, the Sausalito City Council committed the City to an ongoing effort to develop programs and initiatives to address the inequities created by systemic racism. Below is a progress update on some of the efforts currently underway.
  • On August 18, the City Council will consider a recommendation to purchase body-worn cameras for officers of the Sausalito Police Department. Among other benefits, the deployment of body-worn cameras is expected to increase transparency between the police department and the community.
  • At the same meeting, the City Council will consider a proposal to allow residents of unincorporated areas in the 94965 ZIP code, which includes Marin City, to be appointed to serve in a liaison capacity on six of the City's boards and commissions, including the Community Safety/Disaster Preparedness Committee and the Economic Development Advisory Committee. The Council will also consider extending the City's Resident Parking Program to people living within the entire 94965 ZIP code.
  • The Parks and Recreation Department is working with the Sausalito Marin City School District and other stakeholders to develop "learning hubs" to support distance learning for local schoolchildren.
  • City Administration is evaluating consultants to provide race and equity workshops for City staff and the City Council.
  • To support area schoolchildren, the Sausalito Library will soon begin a project with the Marin City Library, the Sausalito Marin City School District, and Willow Creek Academy to evaluate and develop plans for improving the collection of books in the Willow Creek Academy library.
  • The Sausalito Library is also collaborating with the Marin County Free Library, the Mill Valley Public Library, and the Sausalito Historical Society on virtual programs about racial justice and the history of racism in Marin.
Regular updates on the City's racial justice initiatives will appear in future editions of Currents. Ideas for new initiatives may be shared with City Clerk Heidi Scoble at hscoble@sausalito.gov.
