The start of construction on a grant-funded improvement project at the Sausalito Ferry Landing was celebrated by members of the City Council, state and county elected officials, and key contributors at a groundbreaking ceremony on the morning of Monday, October 7.

The project has funding of $2.0 million from the Federal Transit Administration, $400,000 from the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, and $100,000 from the City of Sausalito.

When complete, landside amenities at the ferry landing will include an expanded plaza area, new benches, a pedestrian promenade in place of Tracy Way, and improved queuing zones for cyclists and pedestrians waiting for the ferry.

The groundbreaking ceremony featured brief speeches by Mayor Ian Sobieski, Vice Mayor Joan Cox, State Representative Damon Connolly, County Supervisor Stephanie Moulton-Peters, and Denis Mulligan of the bridge district.

Receiving special praise were the local professionals who volunteered hundreds of hours to develop and refine the design of the project: Landscape Architect Bill Hynes, Architect Michael Rex, and Architect Jacques Ullman.

Following the speeches, elected officials were joined by Mulligan, Hynes, Ullman, public works staff, and aides to U.S. Representative Jared Huffman for a series of groundbreaking photos with ceremonial shovels.

Construction on the project started in late September and is expected to be finished by December 2024 or January 2025. Ferry service will remain uninterrupted while construction is underway.
