About Street Parking in Sausalito
  • There are generally three types of street parking in Sausalito:
    • Free Parking
    • Metered Parking
    • Permit Parking

Free Parking

  • Free parking is usually indicated by signage and/or green curbs or unpainted curbs
    • When no curbs are present you will need to look for regulatory signage in the area
  • Free parking areas usually have a posted time limit associated with that area or space, make sure you check your surroundings and look for signs indicating any time restrictions

Metered Parking

  • Metered parking spaces in Sausalito are found mostly in the downtown area
  • Metered spaces are enforced every day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
    • Payment may be deposited by most US currency (nickel/dime/quarter/dollar coin) or by credit/debit card (VISA/MC/DISC/AMEX)
    • When your time expires you will need to vacate the space or purchase more parking time, up to the maximum time limit allowed
  • There is a 3-hour maximum enforced at all metered spaces, until 6:00 p.m. every day
    • Parking is free between the hours of 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. at all metered spaces
    • Check the area for regulatory signs indicating any additional parking restrictions
  • If you arrive before 9:00 a.m. in the morning, you may pre-pay for your parking right away
    • Either deposit coins or swipe your credit/debit card to begin
    • The meter screen will display the amount of time being purchased
      • including the hours/minutes until 9:00 a.m.
      • This may be confusing at first, confirm that the expiration time is correctly displayed

Parking at a Broken or Jammed Meter

  • Report broken or jammed meters to Sausalito Police Services by calling (415) 289-4170
  • If a meter is broken, you may park for free up to the posted time limit, generally three hours
  • However, if you park at meter that accepts at least one form of payment (either coins or credit/debit card), then you are still required to pay for parking
  • Only when a meter does not accept any form of payment or the screen is not functioning is it considered "broken," and only then would you be able to park for free up to the time limit
  • The screen on the meter will indicate if a form of payment is unavailable, as long as payment can be made with either coins or a credit/debit card then meter is considered operational and payment is required during the hours of enforcement

Permit Parking

  • There are three residential parking permit areas in Sausalito, each with its own parking permit
    • Areas B, C & H each refer to a specific section of streets within Sausalito
    • Each area offers two hours of free parking during the day, see signs for hours
    • Area C further restricts parking on certain streets to permit holders only after 6:00 p.m.
  • Vehicles parked in excess of the free parking time and not properly displaying a current and valid parking permit for that parking area may be subject to a parking citation
  • For more information, check our Area Parking Permit page

Parking with a Valid DP Placard or a DP/DV License Plate

  • If you have a valid California DP placard, DP license plates, or DV license plates, you may:
    • Park in any limited time parking area in excess of the posted time limit
    • Park at any metered space at no charge
    • Park in an area indicated as resident permit parking only
  • Out-of-state and out-of-country placards and plates are also honored, so long as they are current
