City Completes Relocation of Encampment to Marinship Tennis Courts

Post Date:02/11/2022 7:20 PM

On February 10, the City of Sausalito successfully completed the relocation of its designated camping area for unhoused individuals to the Marinship Park tennis courts, as authorized by U.S. District Court Judge Edward Chen.

The encampment's former location on the grassy area of Marinship Park is now closed and cleared of abandoned items.

Encampment residents began moving to City-installed tent platforms on the tennis courts on January 24. Tents have also been provided by the City. No residents remained at the encampment's former location at the time of its closure on February 10.

Approximately 30 individuals currently inhabit the new camping area on the tennis courts. Two encampment residents are being providing with temporary shelter and storage space by the City until additional platforms can be constructed and installed.

Ongoing management of the encampment will be performed by Urban Alchemy, a non-profit organization under contract with the City.

As articulated in a policy statement released last week, "The City of Sausalito is committed to treating all individuals experiencing homelessness with compassion and dignity. As such, Sausalito is dedicated to acting expeditiously and cooperatively to eliminate the need for the Marinship Park tent encampment by continuing, and expanding, partnerships and collaborations focused on identifying and/or creating a range of housing opportunities for persons who have no alternative for sleeping indoors."
